If you are diagnosed with infertility, then IVF is the best option to achieve parenthood. For those who do not know about what is IVF, let us explain the process first.
IVF stands for In Vitro Fertilization; it is a procedure to have babies when you are diagnosed with infertility.
In this process, female eggs and male sperm’s fertilisation takes place in a special lab, under the care of an IVF specialist. After the embryo development in the lab, it is inserted using injection into the woman’s uterus.
Some of the reasons why you should consider going for an IVF procedure regardless of age:
- The success rate is high as compared with other fertility treatment. IVF treatment provides a higher expectation of success for infertile couples.
- You can go for multiple attempts if you do not succeed in the first IVF cycle.
- You also have an option to use donated eggs or sperms. In case you have issues related to less production of fertilised eggs or the quality of the eggs or sperm is lacking or unhealthy.
- IVF treatment can help even if you are dealing with delay or irregular flow of menstrual cycles.
- IVF treatment can help you tackle miscarriage, i.e. IVF decreases the chances of a miscarriage.
- You can also freeze eggs and control your pregnancy time with IVF treatment.
- IVF also helps in increasing your chances of pregnancy if you suffer from fallopian tubes blockage, endometriosis and any other fertility problems.
- IVF treatment can assist you if you have low sperm count or the presence of only testicular sperm.
Now that you know the benefits IVF procedure can give you. Let us move on to the actual question.
What is the Right Age an IVF Treatment?
Age is a significant factor for IVF treatment. Generally, women in their 20s and 30s experience a higher rate of success for IVF implantation.
Age success rate of IVF procedure:
- 30–35 Age: 37% Success rate
- 35–37 Age: 31% Success rate
- 38–40 Age: 21% Success rate
- 41–42 Age: 11% Success rate
- Over the age of 42: 4% Success rate
IVF treatment grants the ability of pregnancy for you in menopause as well. However, the rate of success declines after mid-thirties.
The eggs inside your ovaries also undergo a similar amount of ageing. The ageing eggs end up losing their capability of fertilisation, diminishing your chances of implantation.
At the age of 30, you have about 12% of the 300,000 eggs which you had when you were born. By the age of 40, only 9000 of them remain.
As soon as you reach the age of menopause (50-55), there are significantly fewer eggs remaining in the ovary, and their viability is questionable.
So it can be concluded as per various surveys that women in their twenties up to mid-thirties experience a higher success rate when it comes to IVF.
In the case of IVF after menopause, there are two possibilities:
- You can use your eggs which were frozen at an earlier stage, or you can opt to take the eggs of a donor which are fresh or frozen.
- If your uterus is ready, you can receive embryos that originated from an egg of an egg donor.
In such cases, even though you do not have a genetic link with the child, you have a physical connection through pregnancy and childbirth.
The donor will be younger and healthier, so you can get many viable eggs. Generally, the father of the baby can be your male partner.
Even after the menopause begins, your uterus is still fully capable of carrying out a successful pregnancy. After harvesting of eggs, it is placed into the uterus 3-5 days after fertilisation.
So, even if you are above 50, you do have a high chance of successful IVF pregnancy.
